Careful What You Say In Church

Today for children's sermon I was trying to illustrate the point of how God is not fair but God is gracious. So I asked the kids what they would feel like if I promised that if they were very good in church, did not talk, and kept their hands to themselves then they would get a candy bar. Then at the end of service I gave all the kids a candy bar even the ones who were not good in church. How would they feel? Well, the older ones understood for sure and were very concerned that it would not be fair if I did that. Then we talked about how it would have been fair and that I was being generous if I would do this. Now I thought that all the kids got the point that it was just an example.
But as I was putting Sophia in the car today she said to me, "I did not get my candy bar after church and I was very good. I did not talk at all, just like you said. Did you hear me? I was very quiet and very good." I didn't even try to explain that I was just an example. Instead I told her she could have a treat when she got home for being so good.
You never know what they are paying attention to in church.
